Unlike the nationalistic tendencies in some nations the continent of Africa is in the early stage of another effort to create a confederation similar to the European Union.  Free trade and free border crossings within their own areas are a positive step toward integration.  The continent faces daunting challenges, high birth rates, low literacy, unstable governance, starvation, inflation, and very limited exportable products.  But they see a multilateral approach as superior to nationalism in moving forward.  This article from FOREIGN AFFAIRS presents this optimistic turn among the nations of the "Dark Continent."
